Thanks to my amazing son, I have the start of a new Word Press site. I have not pulled the switch yet, so this is not the address, just a preview. I plan to leave the old Buzzmachine (ugly, design, extra colons, and all) in place just as it is, though I’ll cut off the ability to post comments there in a few days. From June 2005 back to the beginning, the old site and its permalinks will stay intact. Moving forward, I need to get a proper blogroll, about-me link, new RSS link, and so on up here. But in the midst of Movable Type war with hosts across the country last night, my son created this site in no time flat. Thanks, Jake.

I hear the need to change to headline permalinks (but what happens if I use the same headline more than once, which I do)?
I switched from MT to WordPress last month (and immediately saw my comment and trackback spam go to nearly zero). There’s a ton of information about moving MT archives to WP here, http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_from_Movable_Type_to_WordPress, as well as links there for forwarding your old permalinks to your new permalinks. I imported my old blog, forwarded all the permalinks (for individual entries and archives) and then deleted the MT installation.
And unless you use the same headline more than once on the same day, you shouldn’t have a problem. On my blog, the format for permalinks is, for example, year/month/day/headline/.

Like Mark, I also migrated to WP. I do get spam comments and trackbacks, but there are a wide variety of very effective antispam plugins.
My problem with WorpPress is this: I’ve had so few problems, I’ve tended to ignore its potential. Your son just looks like a genius. He’s not really. I’m a complete idiot and can work the damn thing.
