I sent money to the Red Cross. Robertson is a slippery little devil and is more than likely trying to refurbish his ruined image. Based on his past performances I wouldn’t trust him or anything he is associated with. If you are so inclined to donate money to Operation Blessing then do so. Just send a prayer along with your money asking that it go to help those who really need it and not to line Pat Robertson’s already bulging pockets.

There is such a lack of charities out there, FEMA almost has to include Robertson’s. The fact that Robertson is such a big backer of Bush is obviously just a coincidence. I wonder if the Reverend Moon has a charity as well?

All you right wingers out there woudn’t find any thing amiss about a weird South Korean religious leader who conducts mass weddings getting listed on a US governemnt web site, right?

Did some people forget how to read? FEMA has a list of charities and, if I’m not mistaken, a disclaimer. Now they’re giving money to Pat Robertson. I’m not one to defend Robertson or FEMA, but it’s just a list, and a list which includes a lot of other religious charities. And some of the hysterical, conspiracy mongering on Sploid–a site I usually enjoy–the last few days is shameful.

I just looked up operation blessing on charity navigator, they’re one of the highest rated charities on that site. 99.4% of the money goes to programs that help people, only .5% goes to administration and fund raising. Compare that to Red Cross at that uses 91% for programs and 9% for administration and fund raising.

I don’t see why FEMA shouldn’t be able to use Operation Blessing. Do people object to it because they’re a christian charity? Do people object to the Salvation Army as well? They do advocate people pray for the victims of Katrina.

This is stunningly stupid writing. You have officially become no better than the New York Times. Congratulations.

What you’re seeing now in New Orleans is what happens when corrupt Democrats are put in charge of running a city for 50 years.

I ask you: Where is Edwin Edwards? Once you know the answer to that question, everything else will start to make sense.

Until then, let’s save the Robertson bashing for later.

I hope this is a lesson for us all, since we’re in sore need of one. FEMA’s respose illustrates much that is wrong with our preparedness for disaster and public health emergencies. We really must quickly work on this issue.

Avian flu is set to turn into a pandemic at any moment. It is now all over Eurasia and infecting many species of birds and mammals. Nothing like this breadth has been observed for other viruses, so this should be deeply troubling. It kills worse than the Spanish Flu (50% of cases versus 5%), and our hospitals have virtually no “surge capacity” and we have antivirals enough for only 1% of the population. Don’t expect modern medicine to be of much use in such circumstances.

The civic disorder and collapse of public services and public health seen here can be replicated everywhere.

The signs of a quickly approaching pandemic are as clear as the satelite photos of Katrina this past weekend. It is an utter travesty that we’re not mobilizing in response to this “perfect viral storm”. We should prepare hospitals and the public to stock up on essentials. Cities need to plan on how to keep up services like police and fire protection when 50% of their work force is sick. Yet the media and even bloggers are very slow to recognize this threat. (Perhaps it just seems too unlikely since 1918 was so long ago?)

The attorney general’s investigation found that while Robertson was appealing for donations to Operation Blessing to aid the victims of the Rwandan genocide on The 700 Club, Operation Blessing’s fleet of aircraft was in fact flying a total of forty-four hours for the charity while logging 272 hours for Robertson’s for-profit African Development Company. Virginia law-enforcement officials declined to prosecute when Robertson — who had contributed $35,000 to the attorney general’s election campaign — agreed to reimburse Operation Blessing for the flight time.”
