Now, two years later, with New Orleans in ruins, hundreds dead and thousands more at risk, we see the willful neglect of the Bush administration and the morally bankrupt conservative public philosophy behind it in the clear light of day.
Theirs is the Opt Out Society indeed. And in it, you are on your own…
Why in the world isn’t this getting fixed faster? When I hear the mayor on the radio saying “Get your asses over here!!!” and breaking up in tears something is seriously seriously seriously wrong. All of our troops are now in Iraq – our federal government probably seems to feel it costs more money to save the people of this area than to just let it be. Sickening, the leaders this country has elected. Tragic.
from here (lyon, france), we just can’t believe what is happening, it looks like a post-apocalyptic movie. I just wanted to say that we are (people around me), very sad to see those people in chaos conditions of life. May leaders do something quickly.
Kind of hard for the mayor to have a shread of credibilty left when he’s bitching at the Fed’s from BATON ROUGE! He abandoned his city, what a disgrace.
If there was ever a chance for a prepaid debit/EBT card vendor to shine, it would be now.
I’m listening to the WWL live stream, and Ed Pratt, the press secretary for Louisiana’s unemployment insurance program. His team wants to cut checks to 750,000 folks who lost their jobs due to Katrina. Except — these folks don’t have mailing addresses. They can’t figure out where to send the money. And where would folks cash those checks, anyway, with no ID or local abode?
What company can step up here to help out? American Express, Bank of America, eCount? Folks don’t just need money right now — they need a way to store that money.
Kudos on your efforts to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help:
I have opened forums at http://www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.
Just wish to share a humanitarian project I’ve made on http://www.CrisisSearch.com to help with current and future disasters (like Hurricane Katrina/Rita). Please tell others and please help us build the database up…
Over two years ago, I wrote a long piece titled, “The Opt Out Society: The GOP Threat to National Unity and the American Social Contract.”

That this clown is a Mayor is what is seriously wrong. Can you imagine Rudy Guiliani doing as little as this guy.
Only the Mayor and Gov could have called gotten the LA National Guard activated in time. They didn’t.
He could have had buses taking the city’s entitlement population out of town …he didn’t want to use up any of the city’s budget.
From the beginning He’s demanded someone else do it all.
…a poster above says he’s not even in his city !
the Left just can’t stop looting this disaster for very cheap political reasons.
It’s tAvengingDevil…you want to read about the morally bankrupt?
It’s definitely not been the conservative public philosophy that’s been morally bankrupt.
