Being at CES, I found it total sensory overload, but what mostly struck me is that it was rather underwhelming. The HD/BD demos were dodgy at times, with quality that reminded me at times of the first DVD masters of Twister.

Why was Robin Williams there? Why was Tom Cruise? It all seemed rather desparate. What I was mostly hearing though is that the real anticipation was for this Tuesday, not last week.

I had fun at CES (and about 3 hours of sleep total), but I had more fun with the gossip than with the demos :) Although I do want that 103 inch plasma.

Oh, uh.. my POINT is, engadget put up live-blogs of various events, but what would be really helpful would be to architect the stories differently. Instead of a summary of everything Panasonic had to offer, because Panasonic had a big-ass booth and a lot of stuff in it, stories should summarize what is revolutionary first, what is interesting second, and who makes it as an after-thought.

One of the highlights was the battle of the big screens, but these are items that 99.99% of the readers wiill never have anyway. Yawn. Tell us if a company has developed a lower-cost approach to developing LCD so that the rest of us can afford an HDTV without remortgaging the house. Now THAT is news, if somehow *we* can afford some of this stuff...

It's not news that Google had Robin Williams for their keynote.

It's news that Google's keynote was far more popular than Bill Gates'.

It's not news that Google released Google Video.

It's news that Google released Google Video with their own DRM plan and a 70/30 deal for producers where the producers get 70%.

It's not news that Google released Google Pack.

It's news that Google Pack was the second-biggest attention-getter they had and it's only a dumb collection of software that any other company in the room could have put together, and thus contains no actual innovation, but helps Google become ubiquitous by including Google toolbars and Google desktop. Predatory and non-innovative. Maybe Gates' keynote was more important after all.

It's possible to cover the CES quite differently. Robert Scoble just plugged the coolest gadget he had seen - a telescope with GPS that gives audiotours of the sky - and starts a good buzz. Other bloggers do the same. Keeping things small works. Engadget apparently wanted to cover it like an old media station would: by doing everything. I don't think CES is too big; perhaps Engadget is too big.
