Nominate blog opinion leaders

The Week Magazine has annual opinion awards and I’m glad that from the start, they have given an award to the blogger of the year. I’m one of the judges.

I’d like you to nominate blogs you think have been opinion leaders this past year. Just leave comments and say why. The decision of the judges (not just me) will be arbitrary and final. But I want to see some new names in consideration. Thanks.

I don’t get to read as many blogs as I’d like to, but to me Michelle Malkin is extremely thorough, tireless, and very relevant.

    So I nominate her.

  2. Rogel Says:

I would go with Tom Evslin for several reasons:
    1. his blog is source of educated and knowledgeable analysis and opinion
    2. his courage to have his first book published first as blog entries (bringing back old tradition of books publish in newspaper)

  3. catherine helzerman Says:

Do I have to choose just one? Here are my picks…
    1. The Make blog - ultimate DIY source. Excellent mods on everything from cars, to projectors
    2. Oil Wars - blog devoted to oil industry and politics.. sound boring? What makes this blog worthy of blog of the year, is that it makes the subject engaging.
    3. MonkChips - gold standard for IT Analyst blogs - very well written, witty mix of vendor coverage, comentary, and some politics thrown in for good measure

  5. JennyD Says:

How about me as a education blogger? I actually write and generate discussion on theoretical and political topics. I don’t just regenerate news.

  6. Jim Brylinski Says:

I nominate Althouse (althouse.blogspot.com) for a blog opinion leader award. For example, her lawprof coverage of the Alito Supreme Court nomination has been exceptional. Her review of the Milbank piece involving Humphrey’s Estate was widely linked. Very prolific and always high quality, a good read. She even blogs American Idol!

  7. Bob Moss Says:

How about Andrew Sullivan at time.blogs.com/daily_dish/?

Although I don’t agree with everything he writes, he has created a terrific dialogue with readers - liberals and conservatives alike. It is a good example of how a thoughtful, commited writer can use a blog to create a very engaging daily read.

  8. Mark Says:

I feel like I’m dissing a whole bunch of great blogs, but when push comes to shove in the big scheme, I have to go with Belmont Club

  9. jeb Says:

Jeff - for courage, I’d nominate 2 bloggers from Iraq:
    http://twentyfourstepstoliberty.blogspot.com/ , and
    http://baghdadtreasure.blogspot.com/2006/01/im-back-but-she-is-gone.html

For doing the most in 2005 to bring blogging to the mainstream, love her or hate her:

    For best irreverent thinking:

For best humor & gossip, tie:

Best in media coverage (with buzzmachine out of the running)

    Ciao

  10. James Cooper Says:

Bubblegeneration - miles ahead of anything else on media 2.0 - incredibly perceptive, challenging and structured thinking.

  11. Guy Brighton Says:

How about Piers Fawkes of trends blog PSFK and ideas site IF and eco site ECO?
    http://www.psfk.com
    http://if.psfk.com
    http://eco.psfk.com

  12. Tom Devine Says:

In all immodesty, my website is the epitome of what a local blog can be.

  13. Peg K Says:

Outside off the mega-blogs, I would nominate Booker Rising.
    http://bookerrising.blogspot.com/

Shay, the author of the site, has an incredible array of statistics, posts, data and so forth about blacks. Not only is her commentary sagacious, her links are illuminating and the comments following also eye opening.

Booker Rising has a libertarian/moderate/conservative focus; nice to see some diversity within the black community!

  14. Marina Architect Says:

Josh Marshall, Arriana Huffington, Kevin Drum, Kos, Dave Winer, Duncan Black, Jason Fried, Fred Wilson and Jeff Jarvis (Our Host) for thought leadership in the blogosphere for me . . . many many others exist but they are the leaders in my view.

  15. Marina Architect Says:

Josh Marshall, Arriana Huffington, Kevin Drum, Kos, Dave Winer, Duncan Black, Jason Fried, John Batelle, Fred Wilson and Jeff Jarvis (Our Host) for thought leadership in the blogosphere for me . . . many many others exist but they are the leaders in my view.

  16. Patrick King Says:

In my opinion, the best political blog is Gopher Central. Their editors certainly have opinions, but those opinions don’t get in the way of accurate polling and the voicing of strong opposing viewpoints.

  17. Dayle Lewis Says:

It’s probably too little, too late. As they say, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. But I’d nominate The Enigmatic Paradox at http://www.enigmaticparadox.com - even though it’s only a month old and, as such, probably too new to be seriously considered.

Still, in it’s short live, the blog has covered a vast range, from The New York Times to China, humor to drama. It’s provided some crie-de-coeurs and made some strong arguments, often before they became mantras. It seriously but doesn’t take itself too seriously.

So in the new blog category, please consider The Enigmatic Paradox.

    Thanks.

    Dayle

  18. sam glasser Says:

I would have to say Powerline, Captainsquarters, and second Michelle Malkin’s nomination above.

  19. ruth Says:

I nominate Eschaton for letting his commenters self-regulate and stepping in only when really harmful (such as harrassment) activity necessitates. His community is rowdy, intelligent, and reflects an informed, articulate site that reverberates throughout the blogging world.

I nominate buzzmachine for intelligent analysis and determination in maintaining the bloggers of the world as a viable, respected news medium.
