It wasn’t hard to piece together an explanation — the man was making a video call to his lover. His lover had asked for a screen kiss, or perhaps they’d synchronized one. It was my first glimpse of this behavior, and it happened in Tokyo, but I knew it wouldn’t be my last.

With a fixed charge, this option allows the designated lovers the limitless use of telephone calling and short messeging (quite popular among Japanese), though only 50% off is given for TV calling charge between the two.
But, I don’t think it is for sex..
BTW, I use docomo myself (not sure if it is still 1 among 3) and have no conflicts of interest with any of keitai companies in Japan.
I remember seeing something similar five years ago in Shibuya, long before camera phones were introduced in the West. A couple of Japanese schoolkids holding were holding their mobiles up in front of a cafe, taking a picture of a JPop star having lunch. Ten minutes later there was a crowd of screaming teenagers.
We are only at the tip of iceburg as far as social interaction via mobiles goes. Communication is only part of it. Cell phones services now are a bit like having MySpace with just email. Imagine when they become true social networks.
