Jeff: Finally back online after episode of crazy landlord woes. And reporting to you from SoFlo that people down here are rather nervous about the fate of the Miami Herald. You know, SoFlo is one of a shrinking number of regions having more than one mainstream daily newspaper competing for the reading public. And it would be nice to keep it that way, if you believe that the public benefits from the competition. But The Miami Herald has long had its share of challenges... such as the growing market share of the public which is Spanish-speaking. I don't see how American newspapers can re-organize apart from regionally because the computer capsule model is based on those telescopic sections: Intl news, US news, state and regional, county, north county, south county, central county, east county, west county, and major towns. However, our newspapers are already organized by syndicate anyway. So, it will be interesting to see what new patterns may develop. Meanwhile, Earl Mauker is still fulminating against blogs whenever he can grab his op-editorial page bully pulpit.

This reminds me of the state university that I worked for a while back. It was a very nice place to work with a concerned active administration, but it had the detriment of a huge state government elephant riding it's back. It was frustrating to see new and exciting things that we could have been doing with the web development (what I did for them) but there was so much bureaucracy that I'm sure the Titanic maneuvered better.

I think that one reason smaller papers would do so well is that they are small--meaning that they are never quite far from going out of business so they embrace many of the guerilla marketing type avenues that are becoming more and more mainstream nowadays, like blogs, podcasts, etc.
