Snews

Jack Shafer takes a deserved slap at Times Public Editor Byron Calame (though I disagree with him on one critical point; I think his column on the NSA story was the only one he has written that had spunk). Calame is terminally boring and if any Times reporters their beats with his lack of energy, imagination, focus, and talent, I’d hope they’d be fired. Three years after Jayson Blair, we are left with Calame as a 7th grade journalism teacher with tenure.

What makes me so angry about Calame is the waste of potential. The ombudsman position could be a public door to the hard, messy, fun world of journalism where people could get a look at how and why decisions are made for good or for ill.

My favorite newspaper writer on the media is Tim Rutten of the LA Times. He gets it right so often and wrong so rarely. He took the LAT to task over the Mohammed cartoons issue in a strong, clearly reasoned way. The NYT could use someone of his caliber in the ombudsman position.
