Barney Calame was considered a joke and a dope when he was an editor at the Wall Street Journal-- and at the New York Times, which unaccountably gave him autonomy, he was widely despised as a sneak and a craven scold who only went after small fries because he was afraid to tackle real issues or anyone with power. Academia's loss is journalism's gain.

What makes me so angry about Calame is the waste of potential. The ombudsman position could be a public door to the hard, messy, fun world of journalism where people could get a look at how and why decisions are made for good or for ill.

My favorite newspaper writer on the media is Tim Rutten of the LA Times. He gets it right so often and wrong so rarely. He took the LAT to task over the Mohammed cartoons issue in a strong, clearly reasoned way. The NYT could use someone of his caliber in the ombudsman position.
