It seems a bit unfair to be criticizing JUST Yahoo!, Google and other internet companies for their activities in China. They're being singled out when most of the world's governments, industries and companies are rushing to build closer trade and investment relationships with China.

There seems to be far less grass-roots criticism against them, while the senior executives at Yahoo!, Google etc., can't seem to make a public appearance without being ambushed by headline-baiting interrogators.

[...] I started to write this as a comment to a Jeff Jarvis post about some agressive questioning Yahoo’s Terry Semel apparently endured about its operations in China. But it got to be rather long so I thought I’d post it here instead. [...]

[...] So it seems the NUJ of UK and Ireland have called for a boycott of Yahoo! for their complicity in having a Chinese journalist jailed. Simon reminded us yesterday that it was the anniversary of the guy who stopped Chinese tanks with only the belief that freedom was worth facing down the killer machines of the Chinese Government. Now if only Yahoo! felt the same instead of being the co-driver in those thanks. Tom Raftery asked Bradley Horowitz before about Yahoo!’s bootlicking in China and he has also asked Vint Cerf about Google in China. Both gave bullshit answers in my view but these really are questions the top guys in Google and Yahoo! need to be answering. Terry Semel tried to defend Yahoo! recently and then someone asked the Nazi question. Would Yahoo! have done business with the Nazi’s if Yahoo! was around in that era and the guy said he didn’t know. I only just looked up Terry’s profile. He’s the damned CEO and he doesn’t know? You can forgive Bradley Horowitz but the guy where the buck stops doesn’t know. Dumbass. I guess their corporate philosophy is just some ornament to hang in the boardroom. Jeff Jarvis makes the usual sense but also tears big strips too. [...]

Bottom line is Terry Semel is a plain fool. Even so, I still have to agree with yahoo's decision to stick with the China market regardless of the restrictions they are bounded too. A limited internet is better than no internet or even worse a 100% controlled internet.

Miguel,
I don't think a boycott is the right move. I think it's about continuing to ask the question, keep the pressure on, so that giving in to the chinese is not always the easy course.

Jeff, while I agree with your points, I'm having trouble articulating a specific plan of attach against Yahoo. My long-time email address-which I pay $20 a year for--is with them.

If I call for a boycott, I have to figure out how to stop paying $20...not hard. But since I've never had an email back from them, short of protesting them on MY blog, what do you suppose we can do?

Give us all a lesson in fighting tyranny against American companies screwing up overseas.

Thanks,
Miguel Guhlin
