I've been researching and preparing to apply to j-schools. There does indeed seem to be widely varying approaches to journalism among the schools.

I enjoyed this reflection on J-School Pedagogy by Berkeley's dean. It's interesting to see how Berkeley is encouraging more traditional newsroom relationships (mentor/protege), while at the same time not at all stifling the potential of the program by matching that with an emphasis on traditional media forms (print). I'm not particularly interested in exerting so much of my grad school time on marketing, as I would if I attend Northwestern, or, presumably, Columbia (I honestly haven't even glanced at Columbia's program) -- I'd rather have "making news" as the focal point of my learning experience, not "selling news". And whatever school I attend will definitely be one that's in line with the progressive directions of media.

I've hired a number of Medill grads over the years, and they've all been great.

But, sadly - it appears that even today you can get a Medill degree without taking a single "new media" course, and without being required to understand anything about the Internet. The kids, if they weren't so clueless about their future, ought to rise up in revolt.
