Exploding TV: Katie, wired

CBS announced that it will stream the evening news simultaneous to broadcast when Katie Couric takes over the, uh, chair (do they even sit anymore?). I agree with Staci at PaidContent that though this is a nice step, it won’t meet the real goal of getting new audience. To do that, you have to make it available for download both so people can put it on their iPods and watch at will and so people might even consider making the news viral by sharing. To accomplish the latter, they should actually put out every story and segment separately, so you can watch what you want — not just when you want — and so you can share the stories that resonate.

Wow now I can ignore her on the tv and their website.

They’d get better ratings if they put the webcam under the table to just show her legs.

Hurm. Katie Couric is more the problem here. I can’t stand her on the TV set, why would I put up with her on my laptop or iPod? Even in bite-sized chunks she’d still be annoying.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for sharing your insight on CBS’ decision to stream Katie Couric’s newscast. Interesting comment on putting the story segment separately in order for “making the news viral”.

    Cheers,

As a relative newcomer to the US, the hype surrounding Katie Couric is difficult to understand. Isn’t she just a newsreader? Could someone please explain to me what I have missed. Why does she command so many column inches, blog entries and even news coverage. Why has a newsreader become the news????
