[...] I get most of my wisdom about the future of blogging and the media from Jeff Javis at Buzz Machine. I’ve blogged a but about the federal spending database fight — mostly because Illinois Senator Barack Obama co-sponsored it. Jarvis sees it as an especially important event for bloggers: I think we’ll look back on the outing of Senators Ted Stevens and Robert Byrd as the fools who put a secret hold on an antipork bill as an important milestone in American politics and media — a far bigger event than the ousting of Trent Lott. And that’s not just because there are two more scalps on bloggers’ belts. No, what matters is that this Porkbusters campaign shows the power of the internet to organize, empower, and amplify.
"...we must give Congress cover to support the First Amendment against... self-appointed censors"

You're talking about McCain and Feingold, right?

We've been amplifying the amplification perspective for a while now. Amazing how deaf some orgs are though. See here for the most recent example:

Ah so thats what that whore Ted Stevens has been up to. I was wondering what new endeavor he has sold himself for. Instead of using is twilight years to do great things for his state and country...he just keeps selling himself to whatever person is willing to put up some money. I think prostitutes have more self respect. I wonder what is next for Senator Whore.

"Parties didn’t matter. Party structures were meaningless. Policy mattered."

I would put it differently, Jeff. Legitimacy mattered. If putting a "secret hold" on a transparency bill wasn't an illegitimate action in the eyes of just about everyone, then... different story.

There's one thing that I think might be problematic about this, though.

When Frist said "We're going to find out who this is with your help, bloggers," a couple of bloggers rightly pointed out that that was bullshit-- Frist had to know already, or at least have the means of finding out easily within his reach. (As well, I'm sure he could have made a 100% correct guess, considering how obvious the culprits turned out to be.) Frist was using the blogs as his cover while he exerted pressure behind the scenes, pointing to the blogs barking at the door. An effective good cop-bad cop game.

If the blogosphere's call for action had really turned on Frist, though, and said "You know who they are, you're covering up, Frist is in on it"-- which would have been technically true-- it would have deprived him of room in which to maneuver and possibly forced him to hunker down on the side of Stevens and Byrd. I'm all for transparency but sometimes a little opacity is what leadership needs to get the job done. I'm not sure how those two things will be reconciled in the years to come.
