[...] But thinking in new directions this time. See this Jeff Jarvis post on journalists building brands [ahem]. He wasn’t quite sure how this works for editors, but I think I know. Leastways, that’s where I’m thinking right now. And aside from 3AM panic attacks that involve Mortgage Monsters, this should prove more interesting. Explore posts in the same categories: Uncategorized [...]

Apologies if I confuse anyone with my football, your soccer but it's not all about brand - as helpful as that undoubtedly is.

Because on days like today - Norwich City Football Club, my chosen specialist subject - have been in the midst of appointing a new manager and at that point being a 'stand-alone' operation is all about functionality, not brand. Donald Duck could be writing it, but as a big news story breaks and now - free from newspapers and print press slots - I follow the story in a rolling CNN, FoxSports style way and take it straight to my readers PCs, lap-tops and mobiles, so the value of the 'brand' diminishes. It's all about the delivery mechanism - ie one that trails events 45-60 minutes or whatever after, not a whole day later if you're still tied in to the newspaper 'brand'.

Apologies if get my soccer and my football mixed up, but it's not all about being a brand - as helpful as that might be.
Taking a newspaper - and above all its print press out of the loop entirely - gives me a huge head-start on my former newsprint-based employers in terms of straight functionality; today Norwich City Football Club - my chosen specialised subject are in midst of appointing a new manager; I follow that 'story' as a breaking news event as would CNN, FoxSports or whoever - only in written form. And my readers follow it - either via Web or WAP. That's not brand working - Donald Duck could write it; its functionality; it's not having to wait for a print press to roll....

I think it is important that freelancers look to other means of income as budgets are cut, and producing their own news/advice sites is a method they should be investigating.

I wouldn't suggest diving straight in, but if they can find a few hours a week and cover a subject they already have a knowledge of, they will soon find out if it is a way forward for them.

Although I think the US is still ahead of the UK with this method of self-publishing.

This is something I tried to do for myself about four years ago, but the business climate wasn't ready yet. While I managed to break some fairly weighty stories, it was the days before Blogads and Google Adsense, and the like. And it was tough to finally justify a couple of hundred hours worth to make the equivalent of ten cents an hour.

It's a much different environment now, not just financially, but professionally. There are more opportunities and more chances for partnerships that provide some sort of base salary that makes it all feasible.

I.F. Stone was the original model for this. He created his own (print) newsletter and did his own reporting. Transferring this to online is just the next logical step.

Josh Marshall seems to be successful with this model at talkingpointsmeno which he has been running for several years now. He has even created some companion sites: TPMmuckraker and TPMcafe. I'm sure his prior work as a print journalist helped him get established online.
