The fragmentation is good -- what the print can do is bring more permanance to add to the facts.

"What the facts mean" is another way of saying speculation about the future -- opinion; all such analysis is such opinion.

tiny typo should be 'there':>> "they believe their must be a line between gathering and editing."
(one of my own edit pet peeves. I also make the same mistake too often.)

[...] Many have remarked on how badly institutional media misunderstand the Internet. The fundamental nature of the Internet is that it is multimediate and the frequency of feedback although variable can be instantaneous. The network that channels your source needs feeding as much as finding good sources to interest them. Jeff Jarvis observes this in his own always present tense way: “fragmentation.” I’ve long argued that that is a word big-media people use to lament their loss of audience and power; we, the audience, call it choice.
Big media has always been quick to slap an 'amateur footage' caption on anything that was supplied by a 'viewer'. They seek to denigrate our contribution while wanting the benefit of it.

Yes, to the BBC, we are 'viewers', 'gatherers'. They are the high and mighty public (private) schoolboy 'editors' putting their lofty interpretation and spin on what we provide. Only they can be trusted with that part. Though I would question who is the 'user' in this relationship (not the 'generator'.

Frankly we don't need this. Everyone should just learn some fundamental editing techniques and tell their own story on YouTube or their own website.

quote: " I’m watching a panel about media and democracy at Shorenstein ... "

__________

...well, that's clear evidence of a fundamental bias problem right there.

The MSM worships the term 'democracy' and uses it constantly... without defining their view of its meaning.

That term does NOT appear anywhere in the U.S. Constitution nor Declaration of Independence; that absence is deliberate. The MSM drumbeat on that term is also a very deliberate political viewpoint.

The essence of 'democracy' is simply 'majority-rule'. It does not guarantee freedom or equality, nor prevent tyranny. Mob-rule is also 'democracy'.

The Shorenstein Center notoriously (..and today's panel) are all, of course, big-government liberals -- no need for a wider scope of viewpoints, in their cozy media & academic world -- perhaps that's why they are puzzled by the rise of "fragmentation".
