Yes, it can be bitter, vapid, pointless, toothless and crude. But it can also be enlightening, entertaining, informative and illuminating. (my next comment is going to sound like a CIF comment) This bloviated whinger is angry about the very thing most writers strive for - A REACTION from readers. And frankly some of the columns in CIF are just plain ignorant. And he is an ARTS critic, blowing off steam about criticim? Sheesh. I read the Comment is Free section of the Guardian SPECIFICALLY because the feedback is so excellent.

Yes, it can be bitter, vapid, pointless, toothless and crude. But it can also be enlightening, entertaining, informative and illuminating.
