Clinton & Brownback: A tale of two tapes
On the same day, polar political opposites Hillary Clinton and Sam Brownback announced their campaigns for the White House on internet video. Compare and contrast.
: LATER: The Times of London says Hillary is “the new Thatcher.”
Hillary Clinton is to be presented as America’s Margaret Thatcher as she tries to become the first woman to win the White House. As she entered the 2008 presidential race yesterday, a senior adviser said that her campaign would emphasise security, defence and personal strengths reminiscent of the Iron Lady.“Their policies are totally different but they are both perceived as very tough,†said Terry McAuliffe, Clinton’s campaign chairman. “She is strong on foreign policy. People have got to know you are going to keep them safe.â€

Good analysis (even parts that I disagree with), Jeff - thanks.

I think what these two video announcements show is the final acknowledgment that campaigns are now totally based upon soundbites (videobites?).
It’s true that the internet is being used instead of buying TV time, but that may be because of the expense and the censorship function that commercial TV imposes. I doubt candidates are trying to reach the disinterested this early in the campaign, so a niche approach may be good enough. The politically active will find the announcements and (hopefully for the candidates) provide the early support needed to make a campaign credible.
Judging from the stringing together of code words and the lack of any sort of stand on issues this election (like all since Kennedy) will be based upon personality and “affect”, not policy.
Fox has already started smearing Obama by innuendo. Here’s a clip of their implying some sort of Muslim connection in his upbring. What is really clever is their attributing the smear to the Clinton campaign, those getting twice the bang for their buck:

Great bit. Brownback certainly creeps me out.
