Gates just had to mention DRM didn't he. On the flipside, when he starts to talk philanthropy he makes a whole lot more sense, "Do we weaken national boundaries and distance and lower them. " Focusing on local niches is very web2.0hno but lets not confuse why that is important (carbon emissions, community, news relevance etc) with why national boundaries are/should be irrelevant for the betterment of the whole world.

Jeff, could you sometime say why any of the "panels" mattered at all to anyone? This sounds so much like the Cadillac of wasteful conventions and conferences, the same things being said over and over, and nothing actually being done at all. Tell me why I should be glad that public officials (Chertoff for example) whose salaries I pay are in Davos at all, rather than doing something productive.

While Jeff was listening to a rehash of conventional wisdom about the future of the internet the real business of Davos was going on behind closed doors (as usual).

The foreign ministers of 30 countries agreed to revive the Doha round of the WTO meetings. This means that the developing countries have caved into to the pressures of the west. They held out for two years, but have now yielded. It remains to be seen what happens when the actual meetings start.

Will the meeting itself be transparent?
