But amount of traffic to a video clip should not be the only or even the main consideration for a public service broadcaster.

The BBC runs many services that get a relatively small audience.

[...] Update 2: Auntie says: Go outside and play. Jeff Jarvis passes along some interesting discussion about the state of the online world at the BBC, including the possibility of sending the conversation elsewhere and focusing what it offers a little more tightly. Lots to chew on there. [...]

Ahem. Well, along with the Noel Cowards, we will always have the Bennie Hills. You can hold reality at arm's-length only so long before you realize that everyone is going over to the pub at the far end of the lane because the band over there is better than the one in YOUR pub...even if they ARE playing YOUR tunes...

People will go where the action is. Period. The BBC may or may not be wise to be thinking of letting others do the moderating for them, but they're wise to at least be LOOKING at it. I have no problem with a retrenching mentality as long as there's still someone keeping in mind '...uh, hey guys...we could be shooting ourselves in the FOOT, here..."

I think real recreation coming back into vogue would be good for all. Get us couch (desk) potatoes out doing something. Less screen viewing would put more money on the streets, and after it takes hold the dillution of the MSM will dry up thru market functions. But to the contrar these screens once purchased and maintained (a near requirement of life) are cheap entertainment (or time filler), a catch 22 for advertisers because it is true MSM sets the bar for lifes passage.
