Jeff,
Excellent, illuminating article. I especially appreciate, "do what you do best, and link to the rest". As a local, "gothamist.com" type bootstrap, I wonder if its effective for me to write national, int'l news when my site is metro by nature. Should I get granular with local, which admittedly isn't as fun, or is the secret of gothamist's success is that they write 20-40 articles a day, and doesn't have that much to do with their NY obsession. They've also implemented social news functionality via Movable Type.

Sure, we're talking about local news here. But this is a great read for anyone learning to grow and better understand then connect and participate with our audiences. Work with Google...but with open eyes and ambitions that make them do things better for us and them. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for jumping on this Shorenstein report when it was fresh, Jeff.

I finally got around to checking our actual numbers; as my post <a href="http://editor.blogspot.com/2007/08/talking-back-to-harvard.html" rel="nofollow"> here </a>) details, our experience couldn't be farther from his report.

NBC in November held a Bloggers summit that essentially sought to bring in local bloggers to augment their local coverage. Clearly NBC brass saw the writing on the wall. Bloggers don't do exactly what reporters do; reporters don't generate the loyalty and excitement that bloggers generate. I think NBC's approach of bringing in the bloggers is the smart move and newspapers should emulate it. With ad revenues dropping from the dead trees and going online, Newspapers should staff the online updates with established local bloggers and let them finance the legwork of the fly-on-the-wall reporters of the future.

Is local news doomed? Naw. Are newspapers and local TV news doomed? Yup. Didn't see this post before I put up a post of my own, "<a href="http://thefutureofnews.com/2007/08/17/after-a-darwinian-struggle-internet-news-will-be-the-only-news-medium-to-survive-soon/" rel="nofollow">After a Darwinian struggle, Internet news will be the only news medium to survive. Soon</a>." I don't put much hope in online newspapers, though. The problem is a journalism culture unaccustomed to competition, prone to elitism, and foreign to entrepreneurialism.
The Pew Research Center released a study on Aug 9 on <a href="http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=348" rel="nofollow">who America trusts for their news</a>...very interesting results. Local TV/newspapers still come out on top though, even though they're declining:

Using a small Midwestern US city as an example, local outlets may be able to compete but the problem is the ownership. You mention reporting which is also a problem even for the industry overall. The information, the content, and concerns of local residents are ignored equally to the public at large not being served by the giants who own nearly everything.
A steady diet of scandal, gossip, death and dismemberment with one human interest story at the end of an over advertised 1/2 hour new program on TV is duplicated by print and internet media as well.
