Any school with a J department worth its weight in salt has a school paper. Why not have a school blog? Throw in a bunch of interactive features, have J classes contribute and get the students learning how to operate blogs. Allow the student population to talk about where they go for cheep pizza and beer and give J students experience moderating nasty post-sports event comments.

Jeff,

Some suggestions for Deans and Faculties:

First: Improve the Liberal Arts curricula of your School.

Second: Teach the student how to think, how to read, how to write, and how to speak in more than one language.

Third: Thinking is more important than doing.

Fourth: Avoid mono-media majors and don’t spend too much time with technology: students know more than many teachers!

Fifth: Travel and train your students with some semesters abroad. The Erasmus program in Europe is a must. Joseph Pulitzer was right.

And to the students: If your life is in a computer (see the picture of my last post), remenber the British say: “garbage, in, garbage out.”

[...] How do we teach the conversation? (by Jeff Jarvis) The reality of technology and media today is that everyone can create. The reality of business and journalism is that we must find new ways to collaborate; as our institutions shrink, our strategic challenge in news is to produce less and gather more – and thus we need to encourage others to produce more so we can gather it. And our challenge as educators is to improve the journalism that all these people, professional and amateur, do. [...]

Jeff, I hope this new emphasis on conversation does not mean all your future posts will be as long as this one :). Anyway, I think the idea is not new, but is very, very old -- going back 500 years before the printing press was invented. Back then, news was spread by word of mouth, and to influence the news you had to be reliable, trusted, and entertaining -- think the town "yenta." I'm not sure this is all that easy to teach -- it's less of a science than an art or a natural talent. But, worth a try in an era in which we will all be technologically-empowered word of mouth global villagers. (Steve Boriss, The Future of News)
