Hi Jeff, German weekly "Der Spiegel" has an interesting story about a German newspaper that is massively investing in its website, putting the focus on a localisation of news and reports. This might be interesting for you
(German only, but I understand you can read this?):
<b>"WAZ"-NEUSTART IM NETZ
Ganz, ganz tief im Westen</b>
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/0,1518,513770,00.html

Quite a coincidence, the WAZ web team, under the lead of a renowned German blogger, goes exactly the way you picture here, using its many local editors and reporters to generate content that will be published online, using map technics and databases containing regional informations. The idea is to provide the reader with news about his surroundings or other places of interest, and lead him to additional informations that are interesting in this context. For instance, when he reads that there well be a concert near his place, the information that there will be also construction works that might hamper his travels will be only a mouseclick on the map away. Well, this sounds good, and isn't this a good example for what you're always preaching here? :-)

The new site 'derwesten.de' starts monday. I'm curious if its as good as it sounds.

A publicly editable Google Spreadsheet would be a decent way to gather community data today. And I believe that could be plotted on a Google Map without too much work.

I'm with you Jeff. I have long been thinking about an open and distributed blogging (and now microblogging) platform (which could double as your open ad network) that allowed wiki like collaboration. And I've always felt SSE would play a role.
And the RSS enclosure handles just about any media type.
Making meaning of it all is another thing.

Minor correction, Jeff: you don't need a GPS phone for Socialight to check your location in the UK; it works using cell towers for any phone on most cellular carriers (after opt-in).

More info here: http://blog.socialight.com/2007/10/19/uk-live/
