In the class I ask students to write a business plan.

I would be interested in cooperating with you examining the type of news business models you describe in this post. Perhaps we could do a joint project of some kind with students in your Entrepreneurial Journalism class.</description>

		<description>Much of what Dave Morgan proposes is already happening at local papers. None of it helps, however, if the company doesn&#039;t have a clearly defined mission to do good journalism. Without that, you end up with an assembly-line mentality: different parts of the paper working to generate revenues/savings without much thought given to quality or truly innovative content.

Setting aside whether disaggregation is a good business model, newsrooms need to be conscious of the fact that they exist as part of a conglomeration of businesses that makes up the modern newspaper. At the very least, the disaggregation argument clears the smoke that allows corporations to rationalize the lower quality journalism that follows excessive belt-tightening.

In looking to the future, I think it is wise to look at the newsroom as a separate entity and figure out what we want it to become. After all, isn&#039;t it better to grow a business around the newsroom than to let the business dictate what the newsroom must become?</description>
