Wallace was answering a question about what the NYT should do, not what she wants to do with the AJC.

Wallace: “Become that voice for the intellectuals of America on any platform.”

What a joke! The editrix of the AJC wants us to believe that she will turn that paper into some warehouse of intellectualism. Their lead stories on their websites are about baby names, home makeovers and whatever the latest schlocky thing suburban Atlanta housewives want to stuff in their new Pulte home. Their official in-house intellectuals -- Jay Bookman, Cynthia Tucker -- are very pedestrian (being nice here) because they would never hire someone with education and experience who actually KNEW something and could write with authority on a topic, other than what occurs to them as they stare into their navels.

This would take a revolution in management. And as for effective newsroom managers, ha! Gimme a break. Bunch of former C-student journo major undergrad potsmokers from ho-hum schools who can only adequately flatter their equally ignorant superiors into a false sense of competence. I hope the paper's owners recognize how untethered from reality this notion is...

Most of the best reporters/journos left that paper and the industry in general. I speak from experience. The AJC and others have to rebuild from basics, like reporting the G*D damned news! She's trying to teach flying squirrels to become astronauts. Won't happen.

Circ is down nearly 20 percent during her tenure. Nuff said.

None of the newspaper people have a single shred of business sense, and that includes the owners. The new ones, too. They overlook such obvious revenue sources that I can only conclude that they want their companies to die.

Which, of course, would make wingnuts like Jarvis happy as clams. But Jeff, when the NYT shuts its doors, Murdoch won't have to offer as much. Be careful what you wish for.
