I was part of the workshop. I think a key element has been missing. Not only we proposed to help the newsroom with bloggers but ALSO with a network of paid “citizen journalists”. I proposed, with Benoît Raphaël the editor of Lepost.fr (Le Monde Multimedia Group), to follow the French model of local newspapers. Model where there are 10 paid “citizen journalists” (called: correspondents) for 1 pro-journalist. Local newspapers, in France, have been functioning this way for the past 50 years. 70 to 80% of the content of a local newspaper is produced by those paid correspondents. It gives them the possibility to report on a very hyper local level. To be clear: correspondents are not free-lances and they are not very well paid.

I just built something you might find interesting. It crawls the local blogs and papers here in San Diego and categorizes content so it's possible to have sections like a newspaper but with content from multiple sources.

I'm going to turn on the geography system in the next week or two:
http://newsdiego.com

This was funded a year ago but I now have a day job. It's finally to the point where it's usable in spite of a lack of planned features.

Jeff,

This is a very cogent approach, i am glad to see you brought such a terrific working group together. The equation has always been simple, and is too often over thought by folks with paper on the brain...I break it down like this

1. what audience do you want to serve?
2. what impact do you want to have?
3. what product do you need to accomplish that? what do you need to build and who do you need to hire (journalists, editors, citizens, systems, process)
4. how much will that cost?
5. What is your road map to scaling your vision, projected growth, staffing, etc.
6. Can you stick with it, learn and alter your tactics to get there?

My big question is who has the patience to boot strap their way there, learn along the way, serve an audience and grow them one at a time? Believing that it will make a good business in time?

Or is everyone looking for monopoly profits, quick flips and large returns and too easily forgets that with any new enterprise the early return is always heck of a lot of work and long hours.

The MBAs can help with projects, formal risk analysis, but we need commitment to communities, fire in the belly and willingness to really play these scenarios out.

cheers,

Elizabeth Osder

This is a lot like my pirate ships idea, the starting with nothing. It's probably some failure of mine, or perhaps an overabundance of creativity clashing with a lack of interest in structure, but you're right that it's easier (better?) to start with nothing and move upwards from there.

I'm excited about this work you're doing, Jeff. I hope it keeps moving the ball forward.
