Duncan,

Australian Newsagents are more challenged by the future of print than Government owned Post Offices because so much of our retail network of 4,600 stores is controlled by publishers. They created us in the 1800s and today they determine so much about what we do and how we do it.

What is critical in 2009 is that we think and act for ourselves and not so much for publishers.

In my own newsagencies I see a future for print but in more of a specialist, long tail even, way.

Actually Jeff Newsagents aren't newstands. Newsagents are a dedicated shop for selling newspapers, magazines and stationary, where as a news stand is something you might see on the street of NY.

Oddly the issue for newagents in Australia isn't post newspapers: newspapers are a small part of the business, even if primarily that's how they came about.. The issue is competition, primarily from Australia Post in the stationary market.
