[...] From Jeff Jarvis: “Micropayments have never been shown to work except when distribution is tightly controlled (see: mobile phones and iTunes). Subscriptions have been abandoned by The New York Times and others because the costs, enumerated above, are too high. A newspaper cartel is an oxymoron, as publishers have never shown the ability to self-organize (the last attempt in the U.S., the New Century Network, was a flaming disaster). Charities are lovely, but even the Scott Trust that generously supports this newspaper rose not out of pure altruism but out of a need to avoid inheritance taxes that would have forced a sale. Government support has been discussed in these pages but I, for one, am fearful of the notion of the prey feeding the watchdogs. The Kindle is cool but has a tiny audience.” [...]

"Newspapers should be grateful that Google doesn’t charge them for the value it shares in links and audience. Google is their generous, free newsstand. "

But I think the larger point is that Google is always benefitting off the work of others with its search business.

<i>First, as soon as knowledge is known, it’s a commodity—and not a scarce one that can be controlled.</i>

Tom Curley & Co. are working on that problem, with the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/22/AR2009022201243.html" rel="nofollow">"hot news" doctrine</a> as their legal cudgel du jour. Not that the AP will have any more luck with that than its other litigation tactics.

There are too many pleas for rescue that appeal to the idea that news magically (morally!) deserves payment but ignore what we users of news really want. You want exploration of a new business model?

My sense is that real human potential for increased trust between journalists and their readers is one critical place to look for value. The idea? The content is free, but readers pay for increased access to and interaction with journalists. It’s freemium news: free content, premium services on top.
