Mr. Jarvis,

Enjoyed your book immensely and I "retwitted" it to my colleague Neil Seeman at the Health Strategy Innovation Cell in Toronto.

On the topic of privacy, confidentiality, security and secrecy I took this picture http://twitpic.com/24h1o while in NYC.

No matter how much we safeguard our information someone will always have a key...

Google isn't changing 'our societies, our lives, our relationships, our worldviews, probably even our brains in ways we can only begin to calculate'.

All it has done is allow us access (in our homes) to a kind of hybrid public library/archive, the likes of which we've had access to for many years.

The content may be greater (and more personal, in some regards), but the principal is the same - the same as it's been since Domesday.

But more, the 'lasting connectedness' you describe is only relevant where people are willing to share true information about themselves on social nets and the like, while using their 'real' names as reference points.

The reality is that many of 'Generation G' are already taking measures to protect their privacy from those they would rather didn't get in touch with them now, or in future.

Check how many people set their age on Myspace (or etc.) to 101 - to avoid the attentions of spammers and lurkers. Check how many people use tags rather than their real names.

The ability to 'block' or mislead unwanted intrusion is available on pretty much any social app I can think of.

Privacy may well change in time, but it won't be 'because' of Google, or any other search engine or social net.

Privacy has meant different things to different cultures at different times in history - due to a range of culturally specific factors.

And ultimately, if people aren't happy with the privacy afforded them by a piece of online software, they will apply their wits to bending the rules, and making technology do their bidding on their terms - just as they've always done.
