I have to admit, all this open may be a Good Thing(tm), but no government could possibly be expected to endorse it until newspapers and journalists cannot be trusted to report things responsibly.

As we saw from the expenses scandal, in some cases newspapers were making a lot out very little, impugning seemingly honest MPs for what could only have been genuine mistakes on their expenses forms, over a few pounds. (Not to say that most MPs didn't deserve the bad coverage, just not all).

As much as I dislike the lack of openness in government, I'd would despise the situation where tabloid hacks mine open government databases to smear whichever political figure they see fit, with as much dirt, real or imagined, they can dig up.

"dare I bring up a large American brand to the EU?"

Well, Google has 81% of the UK search market... http://www.themoneytimes.com/featured/20091003/bing-experiences-its-first-dip-search-market-id-1086222.html

And McD is quite popular in France... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/6259044/McDonalds-restaurants-to-open-at-the-Louvre.html

(I suspect this is a big "thank you" for that big statue in New York).
