Very good point Jim – all the more raeosn to ensure the internet caters to the needs of the many in a democratic way that’s not influenced by the financial interests of corporations, ISPs or specific countries. The internet is here for everyone and shouldn’t be subjected to the whims and self-interests of the few.

This reminds me of what Seth Godin comes back to often in his thinking – books are now just souvenirs of the ideas the author first expressed online.

The value of reproduction came not from the act of making copies, but in gaining the ability to distribute content to a wider audience. But now, as the cost of content distribution and the marginal cost of information products becomes zero, there’s no need for the reproduction middleman.

So in a way, we haven’t really changed the value equation of content so much as simplified it down to its core.
