: Aftenposten reports that Norwegian "comedian" Otto Jespersen burns the American flag on live TV.
Perhaps it loses something in translation.
(Or perhaps he's just a schmuck.)
Posted by: Asparagirl on February 16, 2003 02:40 AMFrankly Jeff, I'd appreciate it if you'd strike that picture from your blog. Anyone that's curious should follow the link.
As for Jespersen: he should be fired, but not imprisoned.
Hi Jeff,
I live in Norway, and thankfully, as I posted about on my weblog, press spokesman Andrew J. Shilling at the American embassy here in Oslo tells tabloid VG that there has been a steady flow of calls from concerned Norwegians who want to apologize for the event.
Posted by: Fredrik K.R. Norman on February 16, 2003 06:51 AMJespersen's act sounds both unfunny and unenlightening, though not particularly horrifying to me given how much of that I've seen going around lately even from people I generally respect...
but... wow, Norway outlawed mocking another nation's flag?! It's hard for me to even conceive of that.
Posted by: Matt McIrvin on February 17, 2003 03:11 PMOMG! Someone burned a flag! So awful!
Big deal?
An even bigger deal is "Norway has comedians? Who knew?"
Anyway, Otto had his reasons to be angry. USA went to war, and norwegian soldiers had to go to.
By the way, "Norway outlawed mocking another nation's flag?!", I wouldn't say that norway did it, It's only one guy.
And, Otto Jespersen's normally very cool, but I agree, this wasn't funny.
