: Columbia University's J-school halted its search for a new dean because the university's president said the school had better first figure out the future of media. The NYT's Clyde Haberman has a few suggestions.

Young reporters need to be taught to avoid clichés like the plague.
They must also be told never to enter a dangerous situation with a photographer at their side. Photographers are crazy. The best ones are absolutely nuts. They stand right there while people are shooting at each other. You can get hurt that way....
Finally and this one is critical — J-school students must learn never to prepare their expense-account statements when they are in a good mood. The tendency is to err in the company's favor. They will make out far better when really angry.
