Citizen Calacanis

Gawd, this would be fun to watch. Jason Calacanis says:

In another 18-24 months newspapers are gonna hit the bottom and I think I’m gonna swoop in and try and buy one, build out the online portion, and buy a local TV station to go with it. Newspapers are not dead, they just have another purpose in life.

Slight problem with cross-ownership regulation but if anybody can find a way around it, Jason can.

    I listened to podcasts of the ‘unconference’ that he attended earlier this month. ‘Citizen media’. I was trying to figure out revenue models for local or hyperlocal citizens media projects. Those that aren’t tied into an established media outlet. I didn’t really here any. No one seemed to want to talk about that in depth.

    Subscription based? Online is usuallly free. Ad supported? Well, there’s a need to hire a sales rep…and hopefully the local restaurants or car dealerships will have a functional website.

    I wish him luck but print newspapers won’t kick the bucket within 18-24 months.

    What’s this Calacanis guy thinking? Newspapers won’t be dead in that short of a timeframe…

    I get most of my news from the internet, but nothing - and I mean NOTHING - beats the local news found in a Newspaper. Maybe this is the time that someone should come up with a version of Digg that is oriented towards LOCAL news?
